Why have a group plan?
- All groups of two to 50 full time employees are guaranteed issue and the group must be accepted.
- No medical conditions can be excluded from coverage.
Will an individual plan be better for your small business?
- Groups of 2 to 5 employees covered by group plans are generally penalized because of their size.
- Rate increases for group plans can be based on plan usage by the group. This is never the case for individual plans.
- Although individual plans are less expensive, coverage can be denied for employees with medical conditions.
Types of group plans:
- PPO Plans (preferred provider organization)
Advantages:
- Co-pays for some services such as doctor's visits and prescription drugs.
- Discounts for using doctors and facilities on provider list.
- No balance billing allowed, (the doctor can't require the customer to pay the difference between the discounted PPO payment and the original charge).
- Some benefits for doctors not on the provider list.
Disadvantages:
- If the customer uses a non-preferred facility or hospital the deductible and out of pocket limit normally doubles.
- The provider can bill for the balance not covered by insurance.
- HMO Plans (Health Maintainance Organization)
Advantages:
- No deductibles.
- Co-pays only for benefits by providers on the HMO list.
Disadvantages:
- Generally, no benefits paid to providers not on the HMO list except in case of an emergency.
- HSA Plans (High Deductible Health Plans)
Advantages:
- Tax deductible Health Savings Account can be setup to pay for medical expenses, even some not covered by insurance.
- Expenses generally covered at 100% in network once the plan deductible is met.
Disadvantages:
- No benefits are paid by the insurance company until your deductible has been met.
- The family deductible is double the individual deductible.
